You Stole It Sunday
Just want to say right off the bat, this isn't officially an MP3 post. However, every sunday it will be. "You Stole It Sunday" will officially point out the songs that were hits yesterday and made hits today. So lets start this post off with thief...uh...sampling artist number one...Kanye West.Mr. West has learned what every other hot producer has learned over the years...SAMPLING COST LIKE A MUTHA. That 's right. The song you choose to sample has to be cleared (with the artist and the current holder of the master i.e. label, record company, or clearinghouse) and all the publishing and licensing fees have to be settled. It all could set you back anywhere between $50,000 (not realistic now) or $1,000,000. That's right $1,000,000. You'd be better off playing the lotto. But on the real a lot of producers have found ways around this. Way number one includes not using the sample song or sampled part, but rather having a band come in and play the sampled part. Look at it this way, it's just like "covering" a song. This way the only thing you have to do is just pay the publishing fees. Have you ever noticed in music some songs have been played numerous times, over, and over again, but the difference is in who plays or "covers" the song. This all started in rap when Dr. Dre first enlisted this tactic. It was cheaper to go that route and just use maybe a piece of a song. This kept the cost down and Dre was able to pump out funky fly ish like everyday. Enough with the lesson already. My man Kanyeezy, took my man Mayfield's song, sped up the tempo and now the Yeezy's touchin' the sky.
I wonder what band he enlisted to play the song because to be honest Kanye's version of the song is quite nice in comparison to Mayfield's song. Anyway, I love both versions of the song and I though you would too. That's why I'm linking these up for 7 days or 25 D/Loads. Whichever happens first. Enjoy.Curtis Mayfield - Move on Up
Kanye West - Touch the Sky
Actually Chris, Just Blaze produced Touch the Sky. It's the first time the two worked together in this capacity. =LG
